IMWITOR 742 is a blend of plant-derived, mono-, di- and triglycerides, mainly of caprylic (C8H16O2) and capric acid (C10H20O2), short-chain partial glycerides that are more polaric and have excellent solvent properties for many hard-to-solubilize drugs, and is “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) compliant.
IMWITOR® 742 improves bioavailability in both oral, as well as topical routes of administration. It exhibits versatility in addressing multiple challenges encountered with poorly water-soluble drugs during both the manufacturing and patient uptake and is efficient at addressing the challenges of formulating actives that fall into classes II and IV of the Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS).

The performance towards surface and tissue activity of IMWITOR 742 is achieved by monoester content of approx. 60 % and free hydroxyl groups along the backbone of the molecule.

The color of IMWITOR 742 is white to yellowish and it is typical for the product that it might occur in different shapes, ranging from a crystalline solid or partly solid to liquid or paste, depending on the monoester content and on the ambient temperatures. Due to this and in order to obtain a homogeneous product it is recommended to melt the complete container at approx. 60°C for at least 12 hours. It is advisable to check from time to time whether the product is already molten or not. Although it is recommended not to heat over 25°C for a longer time, this shortly applied heating procedure does not affect the quality or the applicational properties. IMWITOR 742 exhibits a slight odor of coconut and a fatty, scratchy and bitter taste and it melts at about 25°C forming an oily, yellowish liquid. IMWITOR® 742 contains no unsaturated components and is thus stable against oxidation even at elevated temperatures (f.i. 60°C, 14d)
IMWITOR 742 Applications
IMWITOR 742 is used in oral, topical, rectal, vaginal and nasal preparations in the amount of 3 – 15 %, depending on the kind and quantity of the active ingredients used. It acts as a solubilizer for poorly soluble drugs in oral administration forms (i.e. capsules). IMWITOR® 742 also functions as a penetration enhancer in topical drug forms. IMWITOR 742 is surface-active and acts as a plasticizer in tablet coatings, as a co-emulsifier in emulsions and a defoaming agent.
